Mandatory To Acquire Certification For All Power Cords: Ministry of Commerce and Industry

The Bureau of India Standards (“BIS”) has made it mandatory for all Indian manufactured power cords, cord sets, plugs and sockets to carry the Mark of Conformity as established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, BIS Rules 2018 and BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018.  The new order, “Plugs and Socket-Outlets and Alternating Current Direct Connected Static Prepayment for Active Energy Order, 2019” (“Order”) comes into effect from December 1, 2020.[1]

All manufactures must prepare for the compliance, however, there are certain speculations of further delay. Certain requests are being made for delaying the implementation of the mentioned order till mid-2021 but there haven’t been any released guidelines for the same.


As per the new Order, all the applicable products will be required to obtain certification from a local BIS laboratory. Currently, in India, there are 16 laboratories for conducting ISI1293 testing and there are 5 laboratories for ISI15884 testing. Following are the BIS standards applicable to power cords[2]:

Manufacturers should check with their suppliers to determine the compliance norms of their products and should consider sourcing BIS certified power cords from India to avoid any hassle.
